How to Take Shutter Measurements

There are many different types and sizes of windows. Measuring twice before ordering is always wise and why we give you the detailed directions below to help you with the process. Realize that the idea of a standard window size is not a reality. Especially on older historical homes windows come in sizes not even seen today.

So, whether your home is old or new, there can be slight differences frome one window to the next in size, so for all shutters you are ordering measure each exterior window. The diagrams we give below along with the measurements you will need to take will help make the measuring and ordering process simple and easy.
We sugest you measure the width and height of your windows you wish to order shutters for as if the shutters would be closed on the window, see the diagram above. This allows you a result of shutters that are sized correctly to your windows whether you decide to use your shutters decoratively or functionally.

You want to visualize where your window opening would be when the shutters would be closed and where they open to. The trim or casing you have chosen is where you want to take your measurements. Very important, the total opening width becomes the paired width of the pair of shutters.
The first step is complete with identifying where to measure for the shutters you wish to order. We suggest that you take two sets of measurements both from the left and right for width and from the top and bottom for the length of your pair of shutters-follow the arrows in the diagram above.

If the measurements aren't exact, use the smaller of the two meaurements, unless your shutters will be used functionally. a slight variation of less thatn 1/4" isn't uncommon and not a major problem. If the shutters are to be used functionally, and the measurements aren't identical, we sugges rounding up to the nearest 1/2".

If you plan to use your shutters functionally, meaning they will close and be secured, we suggest deducting 3/4" from the pair width, and a 1/2" from the length to allow for proper clearance and ease of closure.

Radius Shutter Measuring

It's not complicated to measure for radius shutters. Follow the diagram below and take the measurement we describe and you will have what you need to order your custom radius window shutters order. We describe how to take the high and low measurement and shutter height below.

Current Radius Top Shutters Measuring

The shutter high point is the height of the high side of the arch of the arched window. Measuring from the bottom of the window B to the top of the arched window top A. The radius of the arch will be calculated by the low point height, done from the short side of the window at the bottom B and extends to the low point of the window's radius at C. If you have an elliptical arch, plase call us for more assistance in measuring and ordering.

Meassuring for New Radius Top Shutters

If your house has arched windows with no current shutters you will use these directions to order the correct shutters. You can apply the same techniques as above for the high point and low point. Here are the measurements you should take for your arched windows for new radius window shutters.

The high point is the long side of your arched window and is the length from the bottom of the window B. to the top of the highest point of the arch A. The low point, also known as the short side of your arched window starts at the bottom of the window B and is measured to the low point of the window's radius arch C.

How to Measure for Shutter Hardware

Learn how to measure for your Wildwood Shutter hardware. We help you with what measurements you need and how to go about the process of meauring so you order the right shutter hardware. Below you will find the description on how to meaure your window's casing so you can determine the offset, if any for ordering shutter hardware.

How To Make the Hardware Measuring Process Simple

We are going to walk you through measuring for the hinge offset. Place a flat piece of wood A along the wall extending past the window casing as shown in the diagram to the right.

Measuring for Case-Mount Hinges:

Measure from the casing B to the back of the wood A. This first measurement is the offset and is used for selecting the hinge offset.

Measuring for Jamb-Mount Hinges:

Measure from the back of the inside edge of the window casing C to the back of the wood A and then add the thickness of the shutter. The measurement will let you know how many inches open youu need when ordering mortise hinghes.

Measuring for Wall-Mount Hinges:

Measure from the casing B to the back of the wood A. When you measure if this measurement is greater than the thickness of your shutters, then you might want to use a notched Pintel hinge in conjuction with a Strap Hinge.
